This Waste Station Can Inspire Students to Create a Cleaner Learning Space

The Green School Foundation recently collaborated with Green School students, educators, and SMPN 5 Abiansemal to launch an exciting new "Environmental School Project." This collaborative program aims to foster experiential learning and community engagement, promoting environmental awareness and social impact within the school community.

The launch of the program was held during our socialization event held back on November 1st of 2024 commemorating the beginning of our "Environmental School Project", the revamped waste station, as well as launching our Youth Punch Program, a program where we bring students to visit innovative and responsible businesses around the island to expose them to possibilities sustainability can bring . Over 200 students from SMPN 5 Abiansemal, along with Green School students and educators, attended the event. This provided a valuable opportunity for students from both schools to connect, learn, and inspire from one another.

Here, students have begun co-managing the revamped waste station that has been built and supported by Aqua Pearls Foundation and Yayasan Kaki Kita. This innovative waste station is a testament to sustainable practices. Constructed using recycled plastic materials provided by Yayasan Kaki Kita, the station exemplifies the circular economy in action. HDPE containers were transformed into durable recycled plastic boards, not only enhancing the school's aesthetic but also inspiring students to embrace waste reduction and repurposing.
The enthusiasm among the students was palpable. Fenita, a student at SMPN 5 Abiansemal, shared her excitement, "At first, my friends were curious because it looked so colorful and unique. They were enthusiastic to join in to help sort waste here." This positive feedback underscores the success of the project in engaging and inspiring the next generation of changemakers.

This waste station is more than just a place for students to sort their waste. It serves as a valuable learning tool, helping them to broaden their perspectives on waste management, understand the importance of reducing and repurposing waste, and explore how these principles can contribute to a more sustainable future for their communities.
