Harvesting the Future: A Workshop for Next Generation’s Farmers
On the 13th of December of 2024, Green School Foundation, in collaboration with Bambu Indah, successfully hosted an agricultural workshop titled “Harvesting the Future: A Workshop for Next Generation Farmers” held at the Bambu Indah Resort in Gianyar, Bali. Recognizing the urgent need for more young agricultural leaders to ensure the sustainability of its agricultural sector in the future, we brought together young participants from the agricultural sector to learn valuable regenerative agriculture skills. Held at the renowned Bambu Indah, a boutique hotel renowned for its sustainable practices and thriving permaculture garden, the location provided an ideal and inspiring setting for this important initiative.
This event was attended by a diverse group, including representatives from the Gianyar Regency's Agriculture Department and Food, Maritime, and Fisheries Department, lecturers and students from the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Agricultural Technology at Udayana University, and a wide range of participants from the local community, including young farmers, agricultural communities, and agriculture enthusiasts.
The workshop was divided into two sessions, combining theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on learning experiences. Among the speakers was Edi Juliana from Bekandze Farm, who introduced the principles of regenerative farming, and emphasized the relevance of Balinese wisdom in food gardens. He highlighted "Tri Hita Karana," the philosophy of living in harmony with nature, community, and the divine, and explored "Kosala Kosali," the traditional Balinese architectural concept that incorporates directional alignments, spiritual symbolism, and divine principles in the creation of the food gardens.
Following Edi Juliana’s presentation, Chef Bagus Satriya Wijaya, the Head Chef of Bambu Indah's Tembaga Restaurant, and Saputro Adi Pangestu, Bambu Indah's very own Agriculture Manager, shared their insights on permaculture practices and the seed-to-table concept as implemented at Bambu Indah. The workshop culminated in a creative session where participants were challenged to design their own food gardens, considering factors like space, available resources, and their own unique vision.
Through this workshop, the Green School Foundation and Bambu Indah hope to provide new insights into the landscape of the agricultural sector in Bali. Bambu Indah demonstrates how agriculture, hospitality, and sustainability can be harmoniously integrated.
This workshop aims to not only enhance the knowledge of young farmers but also ignite their passion for regenerative agriculture. Through collaborative efforts and educational initiatives, we believe that regenerative agriculture can contribute to a more sustainable and food secure future for Bali.
